"Windows Embedded Standard" (WES) uses a toolkit to assemble the pieces of the non-embedded OS specific for a hardware platform. There are advantages to WES not available to FES, including a lower price.

Toolkits for Windows Embedded Standard can be obtained via an MSDN Embedded Subscription or by purchasing the toolkit by itself. Evaluation toolkits are also available via download.
Both Windows Embedded Standard 2009 (XP Based) and Windows Embedded Standard 7 (Windows 7 based) are available as both 32 and 64 bit. Windows Embedded Standard 7 comes in 3 additional SKU Catagories C, E, and P.
With Windows Embedded Standard, a single activation key can be obtained from Microsoft that can be pre-installed into the system's image. With this done, the configured operating system can be installed onto any number of systems and the systems will never have to be individually activated.
OEMs using Windows Embedded are permitted to create media for image recovery, update or field upgrade. Creating a disk with the Microsoft Windows binaries is not allowed for non-embedded Windows.

Unlike Windows Embedded Standard, POSReady does not require a toolkit. The OS is installed using an installation disk from an OPK (OEM Pre-installation Kit).

Compact Edition 7 is available in six SKUs, two general purpose and four "vertical market" SKUs for Network Connected Projectors, Navigation (GPS) Devices, Thin Clients and Consumer Set-top boxes (home entertainment). The general purpose SKUs can be used on any other embedded dedicated-function devices that comply with the Customer License Agreement (CLA).
